Yeah, that kid with the formidable press. I was at my first year at school. It just printed woodcuts pasted into the booklet “What is cliche.” Today it is in theJerusalem Print Workshop and is still printing woodcuts on it ….

One of these days I came at Quora or LinkedIn across a question that looked to be kind of banal once – Who was your first and most influential professional teacher?
The answer popped up right away – Mr. Henry Friedlander, My Typography teacher who was the pedagogic manager and funder of the Brandeis vocational school of printing in Jerusalem.

When reviewing my first artistic voyage as a youth, I was drawened to the printing process like by magic enchanting, as a boy, spending many hours in the many printing houses that were in my childhood neighborhood at Mekor Barouch, Jerusalem. All the magic process of making a book – printing and binding. So, to me it was clear this will be my profession. Add the fact that the best printing school in Israel was close to my home.

במהלך הדברים, התברר לי יותר חלקו של מר הנרי פרידלנדר, בהקמה וניהול בית הספר שהיה מנוהל ברמה מעולה יחד עם מר גדעון שטרן.

Just consider that the printing was the first Hi Tec since the world began….and Johannes Gutenberg was the first start up. In fact that school was a kind of institute with a special spirit for the book making art.
The uniqueness of this school professionals had the classical vision of beauty and practical creation of books and not mere craftsmen. I learned the trade at the “Brandeis Center” was a school where teachers team was focused on a unique professional leadership of Mr. Henry Friedlander that left a special mark on me – even though I did not know that he is a world-renowned typographer. Henry Friedlander is infected me with the view of magic and beauty of typography and calligraphy.
כשאני מסמן את תחילת חיי האמנותיים כבר כנער עת למדתי את מקצוע הדפוס מתוך משיכה ואהבה למקצוע כשביליתי כילד שעות רבות בבתי הדפוס הרבים שעיטרו את רחובות שכונת ילדותו במקור ברוך בירושלים. הייתי מוקסם ממלאכת הסדר, ההדפסה והכריכה של ספרים. מכאן שהבחירה בלימוד מקצוע הדפוס, שהיה פחות נחשב (כן, כבר אז כנחות היאה לפועלים שחורים) הייתה לי ברורה מאליה, מה גם שבית הספר הנדיר הזה היה בשכונת הולדתי סמוך למחנה שנלר בירושלים
As it was so alien to me as a child was quite lazy, heavy understatement, I learned from him important principles such as professional integrity, the pursuit of perfection and ensuring all act of making a book. Especially in addition to all involved in the work of typographer and how to write carnations cuts and thicknesses, typesetting, whether written in Gothic style earlier and later, Minuskula Humanistic and Carolingian, Cursive, Unciallis, half Unciallis, and Ancient Hebrew, through traditional Ashkenazic, Sephardi c, and modern and the development of the Hebrew script and the English over time.

אני חושב שחשוב לציין כאן שלמעשה מקצוע הדפוס הינו ראש וראשון מקצועות ההי טק מאז ומעולם – הסטארט אפ של יוהאנס גוטנברג. ייחודו של בית ספר זה היה להוציא בעלי מקצוע בראייה הקלאסית של חשיבות יפי מעשי יצירת הספרים ולא בעלי מלאכה בעלמא. את המקצוע למדתי במרכז ברנדייס שהיה בית ספר בו רוכז צוות מורים ייחודי בהנהגתו המקצועית של מר הנרי פרידלנדר שהותיר בי חותם מיוחד – אף שלא ידעתי כי הינו טיפוגרף בעל שם עולמי. הנרי פרידלנדר הוא שהדביק בי את ראיית הקסם והיופי שבטיפוגרפיה וקליגרפיה
These things sound bombastic and pompous, but these days I found the book made with the modest materials, that were in those days the book by Mr. Henry Friedlander, published by the school. Just note the reference to the task of making the book, its unique design and even though much of the material modesty, was a masterpiece of design.

דברים אלה נשמעים בומבסטיים ונפוחים, אבל בימים אלה מצאתי בין ספרי גם ספרון צנוע של מר הנרי פרידלנדר, בהוצאת בית הספר, ראו נא את ההתייחסות למלאכת עשיית הספר, העיצוב הייחודי וזאת למרות הצניעות הרבה של החומר, יצא מלאכת מחשבת של עיצוב

Sharp-eyed among you probably will noticed the various texts I used to wrote like Paul Anka’s songs, my favorite at the early sixties, stories of O. Henry, and current events in Hebrew from those days of placing Adolf Eichmann trial in Jerusalem.
כהדרן הוספתי גם צילומים מחוברת בהוצאת מורי מאז על מלאכת הגלופה (זוכרים מה זה?….). שימו לב שבחוברת זו יש גם הדפסות מקוריות של חיתוכי עץ. אכן היתה בבית הספר הקפדה רבה על איכות ואסטטיקה ללא גבולות.

I also added an encore Stock booklets published by school staff about making of cliches – the work of engraving zinkography (remember what it was? ….). Please note that this manual also has original woodcuts prints. Indeed, the school was very strict about quality and aesthetics without limits.
